Amazing book. Reading Luhrmann’s account of the Hippie, Jesus Freak history of today’s evangelical churches, about the way the Sixties counter-culture brought new life and energy to replace the “dead orthodoxy” and “dull emptiness” of mainstream churches, I’m filled with hope about the real dialogue that takes place across seemingly unbridgeable cultural chasms. It makes me wonder about the possibility of bringing that Pentecostal energy into liberal congregations and secular institutions devoted to personal transformation.
